Bush expresses regret over death of Italian agent

AFP: Yahoo Publication

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush called Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to express regret after US soldiers in Iraq shot dead an Italian secret service agent and wounded an Italian journalist just freed from a month in captivity.

Bush called Berlusconi from the US presidential jet Air Force One late Friday "to express his regret about the incident that occurred earlier today," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters

"The president assured Prime Minister Berlusconi that the incident will be fully investigated," McClellan said, adding that the two spoke for about five minutes.

Journalist Giuliana Sgrena "was fired upon by coalition forces. Apparently there was the loss of one life, an Italian citizen, and she was also injured in the incident," McClellan said.

"We regret the loss of life, the Italian citizen who lost his life, and obviously she is in our thoughts and prayers as well."

Hard Comment: These Checkpoints need to be reviewed. There have been numerous stories of people being shot dead driving through them. There have been many, hundreds, possibly thousands of phony checkpoints set up in Iraq where innocent people have been killed by insurgants.

I wonder, why are these roads not blocked by 'Tanks', to prevent any confusion by Iraqi's who might wonder if the roadblocks are legit or not.

Also, 'Warning Shots', if I was driving down a road and starting hearing gunfire, I'd 'put the pedal to the metal', wouldn't you?

From the BBC:
Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena has described how she came under a "hail of gunfire" moments after being released from her Iraqi abductors in Baghdad. ..

...She denied US military accounts that the car was speeding past a checkpoint when it was fired upon.

... "There was suddenly this shooting, we were hit by a hail of gunfire, and I was speaking with Nicola, who was telling me about what had been happening in Italy in the meantime, when he leaned towards me, probably also to protect me," Ms Sgrena told Rai radio.

.."I was especially shocked because we thought that by then the danger was past," she said.

"And then he collapsed and I realised that he was dead."

She said the shooting continued "because the driver wasn't even managing to explain that we were Italian".

..Asked if the car was going too fast when the US troops opened fire, she said: "We weren't going particularly fast given that type of situation."

From Bloomberg....
Sgrena told Rome prosecutors Franco Ionta and Pietro Saviotti that the shots didn't come from soldiers standing at a checkpoint.

``It wasn't a checkpoint, but a patrol that started shooting after pointing some lights in our direction,'' the Ansa news agency cited Sgrena as telling the prosecutors. ``We hadn't previously encountered any checkpoint and we didn't understand where the shots came from.''
